OVERVIEW

St. Margaret's Somerset Hospice

St. Margaret's Hospice occupies a semi-rural site on the outskirts of Yeovil. Working closely with the Hospice Association, ADP developed a design that combined function with ambience and aesthetics - responding both to the site itself and to the high level of patient-focused care that the association provides.

The project draws on domestic design to help patients feel comfortable in very difficult circumstances. It combines homeliness and privacy with exceptional care facilities.

The external environment is equally important: the main drive is lined with silver birch trees, providing an atmosphere more akin to a rural retreat than a medical facility, while extensive landscaping incorporates indigenous species that encourage local wildlife.

Large windows and doors bring the landscape into each room and create the opportunity for patients to rest outside and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful aromas of the gardens, which incorporate lavender to stimulate the senses. The intention is to create an environment that promotes courtesy, consideration, respect and dignity.
