Challenge

Founded in 1906, Phyllis Court is a historic private members club on the banks of the Thames in Henley. Members expect the highest quality of facilities – so when the Club appointed us to design a new fitness centre, we knew that we would need to approach the project from the members’ point of view, carefully considering which facilities they needed and how they would use them.

The Club wanted a fitness centre that would help attract new members to the club – particularly in the 45–65 age range. They opted for a small scheme in the medium term, asking us to consider opportunities for expanding the centre in the future.

Approach + Solution

We worked closely with the Club to establish which facilities would be best suited to their current members, and to the new members they wanted to attract. Members can now benefit from a range of thoughtfully designed spaces, including a swimming pool, fitness studio, and fully equipped gym.

Health and wellbeing was a key part of our approach, and we made sure to introduce natural ventilation and daylight wherever possible. The centre has been a huge success, increasing demand for membership to the point that there is now a waiting list for joining the club.
