OVERVIEW

Oxford Castle

The regeneration of Oxford Castle has enabled this former prison, seat of government and royal castle to find new meaning in the twenty first century. Revitalised prison wings join forces with contemporary new buildings to create vibrant external spaces filled with activity. The site is alive with new cultural and historical purpose, a Malmaison Hotel, bars, restaurants, galleries and apartments sit comfortably alongside a museum and visitors’ centre.

Older, unsympathetic additions to the original buildings have been removed and replaced with simple, contemporary elements that enhance the quality of the older stone buildings. The site is unified through a consistent design language, which preserves the integrity of the historic structures and adds another layer of history to the development.
