OVERVIEW

Meadowbrook College (Alternative Provision Academy)

Meadowbrook College is an Alternative Provision (AP) Academy that provides education and support to 5-16 year olds who are at risk of, or have been excluded from mainstream school. The School aims to equip these young people, who often have difficulties with their learning and/or behaviour, with the skills and tools they need to achieve their goals.

Our design replaces the existing facilities within the Harlow Centre in Oxford, which were in poor condition. The new building will accommodate 60 full time pupils across keys stages 1-4 and also provide vocational courses.

During early consultations, the School highlighted the importance of classrooms facing away from the nearby Swan School site, due to the potential distraction from the sports pitches. In addition, it was advised that classroom wings should not be parallel in a ‘U’ type building form to avoid students communicating between classes. In response to the site and these key drivers the school’s ‘T’ shape form was developed, which enables classrooms to have views out onto the landscaping.

The landscape design focuses on providing a safe but interactive environment to suit the needs of the pupils. There is growing evidence that outdoor learning can boost welfare of pupils and improve their performance at school. The setting of the School is perfect to provide a calm place of learning, surrounded by mature trees. The relationship between the internal and external environments is important and the design ensures that people can move between them easily.

Meadowbrook College has an excellent academic record and the new facilities will give the School a platform upon which to grow and evolve.
