OVERVIEW

Innovation Centre

ADP was commissioned by the University of Essex to design an Innovation Centre as part of the Knowledge Gateway masterplan.

Set in parkland adjoining the 50 year old main campus, the Innovation Centre will provide a variety of lettable office units together with generous communal spaces and hot-desking facilities for start-up technology businesses and SMEs.

The Innovation Centre is a flagship project for the Knowledge Gateway site, and reflects the growing trend for enterprise parks on University campuses, which aim to bring research and business together under one roof. The Knowledge Gateway development will build upon the East of England’s world-class science and technology base.

The three storey building has an angular shape and form directly derived from the site and from the original 1960s masterplan for the University campus. Angular wings containing a variety of lettable office space reach out into the Knowlege Gateway site, creating external spaces that welcome people into the central hub from all directions: a form that is both outward-looking and embracing, symbolising the function of the Innovation Centre.

The facade is designed using a regular bay module, which is repeated along each of the wings to provide adequate levels of daylight and ventilation while allowing for flexibility should room layouts change. A reconstituted stone colonnade supports a high level canopy and brise soleil on the South West facade.
