OVERVIEW

Emergency Care Pathway

ADP has been appointed to design the new Emergency Care Pathway at St. Thomas’ Hospital. The hospital has recognised that the current configuration of the Emergency Department can no longer sustain the increase in demand for services. The vision for the project is to create an efficient and patient-focused emergency care facility by streamlining patient flow and pathways and by protecting elective beds.

The project aims to bring together Emergency Care services from across the hospital, and includes emergency paediatric services and Children’s Short Stay Unit to form an integrated emergency care unit on the ground floor of the hospital. During the refurbishment and reorganisation it is vital that all emergency services continue in their operation. We have developed a detailed programme of phases with the hospital, including clinical staff, to ensure the refurbishment has the least impact on the service they offer. ADP has also carried out a feasibility study for increasing clinical accommodation by developing the space over the emergency department at the hospital.

The initial phases, which included the extension of the main entrance and 'front door' to the emergency department and implementation of a new 'streaming' and 'check in' model of care, are now complete. The next phase will see the redevelopment of the Major Treatment and Resuscitation Area.
