OVERVIEW

Aston Business School

Located in the heart of Birmingham, Aston Business School is a leading provider of business and management education in the UK. As part of the masterplan for the Aston Triangle Precinct, we were asked to refurbish and extend the Business School to accommodate growth, and increase the prominence of the entrance at the heart of the University.

Arranged in an L-shape, two new interconnected blocks sit next to the original L-shaped building by Sir Basil Spence, creating a new courtyard.

At the heart of the scheme are reception and hospitality spaces. These lively and vibrant social spaces are combined with 80 sophisticated hotel-style bedrooms. Teaching, meeting and syndicate areas are provided together with office spaces for the University’s MBA programme, and 120 and 115-seat lecture theatres.

A limited palette of accent colours complements the neutral surface finishes, while emphasis is placed on high quality materials.

Landscaping is minimal, with simple lines and crisp detailing. Planting is limited to specimen trees, indigenous tree groups and lawn areas. The project was shortlisted in the landscape category for the Birmingham Design Initiative (BDI) Industry and Genius Awards.
