OVERVIEW

Al Noor Primary School

Our integrated design team, Corde, was appointed to design a new 2FE faith school for the London Borough of Redbridge which was to replace a demolished school at the same site. We were invited to lead the client engagement process on behalf of the main contractor.

The main challenge of the new school was the very tight site available for a 2FE school, which restricted the external area. However, by designing a highly efficient internal classroom layout and by locating a second external play area on the roof, the site accommodates all the needs of a contemporary primary school.

Al Noor means ‘the light’, and this was the core of our concept. We brought the light into the building through big openings and rooflights in key circulation areas and in the main hall.

The library/prayer area is a key area for the school and has been enhanced with the appropriate north light, ideal for praying and concentrating.

When designing this new Muslim faith school with reception classrooms and Years 1–6, special attention was given to wayfinding (each classroom has a distinct colour in the internal walls and external windows). Colour has been one of the main design features in corridors, classrooms, toilets, the main hall, and elsewhere.

The main elevation to the south is expressed as the public face of the school – in direct proximity with the pavement – offering a new landmark to the community.
