Canterbury Longmarket
Much of historic Longmarket was destroyed in an air raid in 1942. Its post-war concrete replacement defied, rather than enhanced, its context. Over time, this imbalance has been redressed through a number of developments.
Our scheme involves the replacement of 1950s retail units on Longmarket/Burgate with a new mixed-use retail and residential development, virtually in the shadow of Canterbury Cathedral. More than 3,000 square metres of retail space has been created at ground and first floors, with ten flats on the second floor arranged around a landscaped roof terrace.
The original site area was extended to reinstate the historic street line, increasing the lettable area available and beneficially recreating the original streetscene and scale. The structure was designed to allow the preservation in situ of Roman ruins which exist under the site, avoiding lengthy delays in archaeological investigation.
The project was publicised over two pages in the Sunday Telegraph in March 2001, which cited it as an excellent example of successful mixed-use urban regeneration, worthwhile for both the city as a whole and for those commercially involved.
Location: Canterbury
Project Value: £3.5m
