Concrete Awards 2015

The Concrete Society Awards 2015 shortlist has just been announced and includes The Forum in Southend.

Concrete has been integral to the design from the outset, used externally as a cladding and shading material, and exposed internally to provide a heat sink as part of the low energy sustainable design strategy.

High quality precast components used externally have been combined with excellent insitu work to the interior design. Great care was taken over the design details, specification and site inspections of workmanship.

The Forum development is a three-way client share between Southend Borough Council, the University of Essex and South Essex College, who have jointly funded the £27m project. Set within a new public square, the three storey building provides a shared academic and municipal library, teaching and research facilities for the College and University, a café, offices and the Focal Point Gallery.

The Concrete Awards showcase the use of concrete as a structural materialand is the longest-running awards event in the UK construction industry.

Winners will be announced at the Awards Dinner in November.

To date The Forum has won a RICS East Award, was Commended at the Civic Trust Awards and was shortlisted for a FX International Design Award and a RIBA East award. For a full list of awards and shortlistings, please go to the awards list link on the right hand side.
