A Win at Building Better Healthcare Awards 2018

The calming interior created at St Thomas' Hospital's  adult emergency department was announced the winner of a Building Better Healthcare Award for Best Collaborative Arts on 31st October.

Working in close collaboration with art consultant, Art in Site, artwork and clear wayfinding were integrated from the outset to reduce violence and aggression towards hospital staff. Features include bold bodies of text with user-friendly graphics, which were developed with frontline staff to help patients move intuitively through the department. In waiting areas, films of staff interviews are played to humanise staff and inform patients of what to expect. The scheme also incorporates illustrations of the nearby urban landscape, which provide a focus for worried patients and clearly marks out department zones, reducing frustration.

Sunand Prasad, Senior Partner, Penoyre and Prasad commented, “Their approach is exemplary in its focus on user needs, its thoughtfulness in design, its high graphical and artistic standards, and in the practicality of its delivery.”

The emergency department was officially opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne (The Princess Royal) on 30th October.
